HYBRID HEART SURGERY TO RESTORE NORMAL BLOOD SUPPLY TO THE HEART PERORMED AT JSC “MEDICINA”.

January 22, 2012

In December 2011 a hybrid heart surgery to restore normal blood supply to the heart was performed at JSC “Medicina”.

Many patients suffering from coronary artery atherosclerosis are faced with the problem of choice with regard to the type of surgery they would choose trying to understand what is the best alternative for them: coronary artery bypass surgery or vascular stenting. Traditionally, there was always tough competition among cardiac surgeons performing coronary artery bypass surgeries and cardiac surgeons using intervention procedures. Each of them considered their methodology more suitable for treatment of patients. Currently, in modern medicine the so-called multidisciplinary approach, when doctors of various specialties choose the tactics and develop the stages of treatment, seems more reasonable.

A patient with blocked coronary arteries was admitted to the inpatient facility of “Medicina” Clinic. With a view to non performing a big coronary artery bypass surgery, a decision was made to carry out the so-called hybrid surgery: minimally invasive bypass procedure at the first stage and putting a stent into one of the damaged arteries at the second stage. These tactics allowed us not to perform a big coronary artery bypass surgery when the chest of the patient is opened and cardiopulmonary bypass is used. This approach implies a less traumatic surgery for the patient and helps reduce the duration of his/her stay at the inpatient facility and the rehabilitation period.

In European countries this hybrid philosophy suggesting that doctors of several specialties joint their efforts to choose the best methods for consecutive treatment is gaining more and more popularity. At JSC “Medicina” Clinic we used this approach for the first time, which proved to be very successful.
