Ultrasound examination for children

Ultrasound examination for children

Childhood ultrasound is the preferred diagnostic method. The growing body is very sensitive and vulnerable to X-rays, which is why child ultrasound is a safe and proven diagnostic procedure in modern pediatrics. This method can be applied already in the first days of life in any quantity as needed.

Features of ultrasound for children

With the help of an ultrasound examination, you can examine many organs and parts of the child's body:

  • elbow, knee, and other joints;
  • liver;
  • neck;
  • ovaries;
  • belly;
  • organs of the small pelvis;
  • parotid glands;
  • hip joint;
  • kidneys;
  • bladder;
  • the head and brain of the child.

Ultrasound examination in pediatrics allows you to recognize neonatal diseases, mumps, hydronephrosis, hemangioma, intestinal intussusception. Neonatal neurosonography, ultrasound of the hip joint and abdominal cavity are mandatory for newborns. Analysis of the brain carried out after birth reveals pathologies, hemorrhages, neoplasms, and various abnormalities. A newborn baby may not have external symptoms, but it is in the early period that effective and efficient treatment is easiest. In many cases, this enable you to provide the necessary medical care and even save the baby's life. Also, after childbirth, an ultrasound of the hip joint is performed. The study is painless, safe, and highly informative. It allows identifying even the smallest developmental deviations, dislocations, and other injuries.

Indications and contraindications for pediatric ultrasound

As indications for ultrasound scan for kids of an older age, completely different symptoms can serve: local pain, fatigue without exertion, increased sweating, if the baby is often sick. During the examination, the doctor will determine what needs to be checked and will order a study.

There are practically no contraindications to ultrasound. However, it is not recommended to use ultrasound at elevated temperatures, as well as for colds or SARS.

Although the procedure does not cause any harm, a small child may be afraid of a doctor or apparatus that will be examined. Help your toddler deal with fear. For example, take his favorite toy with you. So he was able to calmly pass the examination, while remaining immobile.
