Ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder

Ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder has long been recognised as the optimal diagnostic solution for assessing the functioning of the urinary system. It is easily tolerated by patients, noninvasive, requires no contrast agent and it is available to everyone.

Indications for ultrasound of the kidneys

Doctors recommend performing an ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder if there are indications such as:

  • pain in the lumbar region or in the projection of the bladder;
  • signs of urolithiasis, manifested by an attack of sharp, cramping pain in the kidney area with rapid downward movement;
  • painful urination;
  • blood in the urine;
  • back injuries and bruises;
  • abnormalities in urine tests;
  • congenital kidney abnormalities;
  • trauma to the urinary system;
  • diseases of the genital system;
  • suspicion of an inflammatory process in these organs or previous pathologies (cystitis, pyelonephritis);
  • metabolic disorders (gout, diabetes mellitus);
  • confirmation or denial of the presence of tumor neoplasms.

The study is also actively used in the diagnosis of adenoma of the prostate to find out the presence of residual urine in the bladder after urination.

Contraindications

The standard contraindication for all ultrasound examinations is skin intactness in the examination area (wounds, dermatological abnormalities). This also applies to the ultrasound of the kidneys. After healing, the procedure is allowed.

Preparation for an ultrasound

Ultrasound requires a fluid-filled bladder. Therefore, 2 hours before the procedure you should drink 0.5-1 liters of water and not urinate, or about 1.5-2 liters just before the start.

Procedure of an ultrasound

The patient assumes a supine or lateral position. The doctor lubricates the skin at the examination site with medical gel and starts the ultrasound of the kidneys. The duration of the procedure is 15-20 minutes. An additional scan is often performed after the patient has urinated. Ultrasound is recognised worldwide as the most effective diagnostic method in urology and nephrology. An ultrasound of the kidneys can detect and correctly diagnose abnormalities at an early stage and prescribe the necessary treatment.

Results of an ultrasound

Once the diagnosis has been completed, the specialist prepares a description showing the size of each of the kidneys, their position and other parameters. The report is accompanied by a disk where the examination is recorded in detail.
